Facelifts
In the past 10 years or so, the facelift has undergone many changes
and now the term covers a variety of procedures. Surgeons categories
facelifts according to the area of the face they are to address.
A lower third and neck lift tightens the neck, redefines the jaw
line and improves sagging jowls. A mid facelift addresses sagging
in the upper cheeks. Brow lifts raise the level of the eyebrows
and improve wrinkling in the forehead. There are also mini-lifts
and necks only lifts which are more superficial and are often performed
on younger patients and combined with facial liposuction.
Once the facelift was merely a skin tightening process, however
surgeons began to realise that the problem of the sagging face was
due to a laxity in the supporting muscles and tissues, pulling the
skin out of shape, it down.
The SMAS (superficial musculoaponeutic system) facelift was developed.
This technique tightened the muscles and soft tissue underneath
the skin. This gave a more natural look.
Individual surgeons have their own techniques and styles, so when
considering a facelift it is important to consult with a number
of surgeons to find the one you feel will give you the procedure
that suits you best. Always ask how many facelifts the surgeon has
performed, how frequently and how recently. Techniques have changed
over the years and ideally you want somebody who keeps up-to-date
with modern trends in surgery.
A facelift can be performed under general anesthetic or under sedation
with local anesthetic. You should expect a recovery period of between
two to three weeks and in the case of mini-lifts, about one week.
The results should be long-lasting - up to 10 years or more depending
on the type of facelift, the skill of the surgeon and your health
and lifestyle.
